An incisive, engaging follow-up to a very strong first season.
Good: Mrs. Fletcher
A clever, at times poignant mediation on love, sex and aging, featuring another fantastic performance from Kathryn Hahn.
Good: RuPaul’s Drag Race U.K
Good: The Crown
A let down generally, but I still liked it.
Good: The Morning Show
A lot of people think this show is bad and they are…not wrong. But I enjoyed it, and I think there were a few brilliant moments and some very good performances.
Good: The Deuce
Ends as it began: good, underrated, and a completely stellar showcase for Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Great: The End of the F***ing World
Witty and sensitive and engrossing.
An out of nowhere smash of a season.
One of the very best things I’ve seen on TV in a while. Timely, impeccable writing and TERRIFIC performances from a tremendous cast.
Great: The Great British Bake Off
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was.
Wild, wicked and delicious. Hailee is so, so good.
Bad: Catherine The Great
Mirren is very good, as is the production value, but I wanted to like the rest of this much more than I actually did.
It’s not my cup of tea.
Survivor has been a life-long obsession of mine–I’ve been watching since Season 1, when I was 9 years old. I’ll never not watch but…the thrill is gone. It’s not what it was.
Very Bad: Modern Love
There is an undeniable appeal here, a New York, literary, aesthetic, sweet but searching and deep thematic appeal, and there are a few good moments and some wonderful casting choices (Julia Garner, Olivia Cooke, Andrew Scott), but overall it just doesn’t work. Too earnest and cutesy, amateurishly written and annoyingly acted, to be taken seriously or enjoyed.
Very Bad: The Politician
Jessica and Gwyneth can stay but WOW this is bad. Ben Platt is…not a talent. Nor is Ryan Murphy (?) Sorry but it’s not enough just to have good ideas and lots of money and great actresses. I need more.
Very Bad: Transparent Musical Finale
One of the absolute wildest, most absurd things I’ve ever seen, and an infuriatingly disappointing conclusion to what was such a thoughtful, searching and important show.
TBD: On Becoming A God
